3 Ways to Overcome the January Blues

Enjoying this article? Share with your friends

The January blues kick in during the month of January, which is often described as the ‘most depressing month of the year’. We are forced to say goodbye to the glow and buzz surrounding Christmas, and focus on getting our affairs in order for the year ahead.

Here at Albany Supplies, we refuse to believe that you can’t beat the January blues. We can get through this month together!

We have made a list of 3 ways to overcome the January blues and bring out the best in this month.

1. Prepare for a quiet period after Christmas & New Year

After the Christmas period, excitement dies down and we go back to our ordinary, mundane routines – cleaning, working, paying bills etc. This quick transition can often unnerve us and eventually result in the January blues.

Try to avoid getting caught up in the ‘comedown’ of Christmas festivities and instead, acknowledge that January will be significantly more boring than the months previous. Use January as an excuse to reflect and put this quieter period to good use.

Perhaps you need to spend more time thinking about goals for the year ahead? For example - what you would like to plan during the year, gain from the year or goals that you would like to reach throughout the year. Shop our planners and planner accessories here.

2. Recognise what you are grateful for

Christmas is a time of year that can easily become saturated by the ever-expanding consumption of goods. No matter what gifts we receive at Christmas, it’s not uncommon for us to want more. This attitude has become even more accepted in the current age of social media; a place for our peers to post photos of their bigger, better, or more expensive gifts that the ones we received.

So instead, spend time recognising what you are grateful for. A positive mindset can add to the success of avoiding the January blues. While it is great to own nice materialistic things, remember to appreciate our more basic needs – such as physical & mental wellbeing, friends & family, or a stable income. Reflect on the Christmas period and what you enjoyed during the time off. Consider writing these reflections and thoughts down in a journal that you can refer to throughout the year. Shop our journals here.

3. Spend time outside

Although the temperatures are still cold, the days begin to get longer around Christmas week.

Try to avoid spending too much time indoors this January. Start small by going for a daily walk during your break from work, or take a morning stroll throughout the weekend. It may not seem like we are getting much sunlight during January, but even a small amount of winter daylight can certainly have a positive effect on our mood.

Don’t forget your layers - it is still January in Ireland after all! Shop our Thinsulate Gloves and Hats here.
