How to Keep the Kids Occupied this Christmas

It’s that time of year again! Parents are faced with the task of keeping the kids occupied and entertained until they return to school after the Christmas holidays. With Covid-19 disturbing play dates and the understandable health concerns, parents must use their imagination to prevent boredom amongst their kids. In the majority of Irish households, devices such as iPads and streaming services like Disney+ are a frequently used solution to cure boredom. However, it is important that we aim to limit our children’s screen time as best we can. Here are a few ideas that will keep babies, children and adolescents occupied this Christmas.

Inside the Home

Children of all ages generally love being creative, especially in relation to arts and crafts. A variety of old-school art pastimes are still appropriate today. So what is it that your household needs? Whether you’re shopping for acrylic paint, colouring pencils, journals, or glue sticks, our website has exactly what you’re looking for.

Painting, sketching and completing works of art is enjoyable and assists in the development of artistic abilities and skills that your children may use later in life. Obviously, not every child is interested in spending time drawing pictures, so why not attempt something a little more unconventional? Try painting/tie-dying some old clothing, or build imaginary vehicles using storage boxes and chairs.

Making Christmas decorations is also timeless. It’s a fantastic way of keeping children pleasantly occupied and making use of leftover office supplies.

Outside the Home

“A garden is a friend you can visit anytime.” Another way of getting creative with the children is to spend time outside, even if it’s just in your garden (provided it is not raining, of course!). It is evidently harder to spend as much time outside in winter as we might like to, due to the Irish weather. That is why it is important to get out whenever we can. If there are a few people in your household, why not try to play some team sporting games? Younger children tend to love silly, less-competitive sporting activities, such as a sack race or three-legged race. If your garden is larger than most, you may also decide to try a relay race.

If your children are on the less sportier side, then a spot of gardening may interest them. Helping kids understand nature can be great fun. Naturally, most children are inquisitive about their surroundings and can find pleasure in planting flower buds or digging for bugs. Even something as small as cleaning up the garden waste can keep their little hands busy for a while.
